Placing the Liver Front and Center –
The Right Place in Prevention  

SILVER SPRING, MD, January 30, 2013 – Please join us at a briefing to highlight the critical need for promoting liver health education on the national agenda. This briefing is co-hosted by Senators Tom Harkin (D-IA) and Representatives Bill Cassidy (R-LA), Charlie Dent (R-PA), Mike Honda (D-CA), and Hank Johnson (D-GA), and sponsored by Hepatitis Foundation International, the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, and the Trust for America’s Health.

A panel of experts will demonstrate how the critical lack of awareness and the consequences of poor liver health among America’s adults and children, particularly in hard-hit communities of color, lead to a wide range of lethal but preventable diseases.

You will learn how the high incidence of a wide variety of chronic diseases (including heart disease, obesity, stroke, and diabetes) throughout the nation is having a devastating impact. That all of these health conditions are liver-related and preventable underscores the importance of making prevention a priority, bringing these chronic illnesses under control, saving lives, and preserving precious health care dollars.

The Expert Panel

• Richard Hamburg, MPH, Deputy Director of the Trust for America’s Health, will present an overview of national prevention initiatives.
    
• Raymond Koff, MD, Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, Founding Member and Board Chair of the Hepatitis Foundation International, will explain why the liver must be an essential part of prevention efforts. .
    
• Kathleen B. Schwarz, MD, Director, Pediatric Liver Center, Professor of Pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine will discuss improving health outcomes beginning with young children.
    
• Linda Hancock, FNP, PhD, Wellness Director, Virginia Commonwealth University, will discuss how to empower vulnerable college students and young adults to avoid risk behaviors.
    
• Thelma King Thiel, Chief Executive Officer, Hepatitis Foundation International, will close the program by making liver health personal.
